Dr. Alfred Frontera's legacy of compassionate medicine and mentorship endures in Kingston

Dr. Alfred Frontera, a respected physician from Kingston, New York, passed away leaving behind a legacy of compassionate care and community dedication. Born in 1944, he grew up in Brooklyn before building a career that blended medicine, mentorship, and deep faith. Colleagues and family remember him as a man of boundless energy and unwavering commitment to his patients and trainees.

Dr. Frontera's journey in medicine began after he completed his residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City. There, he met his future wife, Veronica, and soon after, the couple settled in Kingston. His approach to medicine stood out—he listened carefully to patients, translating their concerns into clear medical understanding.

In Kingston, he established a family practice residency program, where he trained over 100 medical residents before retiring. Dr. Jonathan Zimmerman, one of his former trainees, called him a 'consummate physician' who became a mentor, teacher, and lifelong friend. Beyond teaching, Dr. Frontera worked at the Community Rehabilitation Center in Lake Katrine, helping children with neurological and physical impairments. His kindness extended beyond the clinic. He formed an instant friendship with William, a young man with Down syndrome, and welcomed visitors from all walks of life. Archbishop Matthew Ndagoso, a prominent Catholic leader from Nigeria, once stayed at his home, seeking solace amid challenges in his own country. Dr. Eugene Heslin described him as a 'Renaissance man,' driven by endless energy and a deep sense of duty to his community. Family also remembered his strong religious faith. His son, Dr. Tom Frontera, said it was the foundation of his father's character, shaping his work and relationships.

Dr. Frontera's impact reached far beyond his medical practice. He trained generations of doctors, cared for vulnerable children, and opened his home to those in need. His legacy remains in the lives he touched—patients, students, and friends who continue to honour his memory.
