Dr. Steve Martin Takes Helm of Alberta Dental Association with Rural Focus

Dr. Steve Martin has become the new President of the Alberta Dental Association. His term officially started on February 1, 2026, taking over from Dr. Hans Herchen. With decades of experience, he brings a focus on rural healthcare and community service to the role.

Dr. Martin began his career after graduating from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Dentistry. He trained as a dental intern in a teaching hospital before shifting his focus to underserved areas. Since 1990, he has owned and run a dental practice in Beaverlodge, treating generations of families in northern Alberta.

His work extends beyond private practice. He has delivered dental care in Indigenous communities and helped establish solo practices in remote regions. Alongside clinical work, he serves on the board of the William J. Spence Foundation, which funds local health projects.

Recognised for his contributions, Dr. Martin is a fellow of both the International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Outside of dentistry, he spends time hiking, gardening, and designing tartans.

As President, his priorities include cutting red tape for dental teams and improving access for patients in public dental programmes. He also plans to expand oral health education and build a stronger dental workforce across Alberta.

Dr. Martin's leadership will centre on practical changes for dentists and better care for rural patients. His long-standing commitment to remote communities shapes his approach to the role. The association's new direction reflects his experience in both clinical work and advocacy.
