A 70-year-old inmate, Abdur Rahman Mia, has died at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). The man, who was serving time in Chattogram Central Jail, passed away on Saturday at 11:30 am after battling severe health issues, including lung cancer with brain metastasis, high blood pressure, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
The jail authorities have begun legal procedures following his death.
Abdur Rahman Mia, originally from Uttar Agrabad in Chattogram's Double Mooring area, was arrested under a case filed with Kotwali police. He had been in Chattogram Central Jail since November 17, 2025.
Due to his deteriorating health, Mia was first transferred to CMCH for advanced treatment on December 24, 2025. He was discharged on January 18, 2026, but his condition worsened, leading to his readmission on January 26. His death certificate listed lung cancer with brain metastasis as the primary cause, alongside high blood pressure, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Chattogram Central Jail Superintendent Syed Shah Sharif confirmed the death. The jailer had already informed higher authorities, and the necessary legal steps are now being followed.
No official records specify how many inmates died in Chattogram Central Jail in 2024 due to health complications during or after medical treatment.
Mia's death highlights the medical challenges faced by elderly inmates. His case involved multiple serious illnesses, including advanced cancer and chronic conditions. Authorities are proceeding with the required legal formalities.
