Fat-removal procedures hit record high as non-invasive options rise

The demand for fat-removal procedures has surged in recent years, with nearly half the aesthetic market now focused on non-invasive body contouring. In 2024 alone, over 38 million aesthetic treatments were carried out worldwide, reflecting a growing preference for both surgical and minimally invasive options.

Liposuction remains the most popular plastic surgery globally, with more than 2.2 million procedures performed annually. In the U.S., over 340,000 liposuction surgeries took place in 2024—a 23% rise since 2019. However, the treatment does not aid overall weight watchers or prevent future fat buildup in untreated areas.

Non-surgical alternatives, such as cryolipolysis, have also gained traction. These methods offer permanent fat reduction but typically require multiple sessions for visible results. Over the past five years, non-invasive fat-reduction procedures in the U.S. have grown by 25–30% each year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Factors driving this trend include social media influence, improved technology, and a post-pandemic increase in elective cosmetic treatments.

The average patient undergoing fat removal is in their early 40s, often with a normal to slightly overweight BMI. While fat cells removed through surgery or non-invasive treatments do not regrow, new fat can still accumulate in other parts of the body if weight is gained.

The shift toward non-invasive body contouring continues to reshape the aesthetic industry. With millions of procedures performed yearly, both surgical and non-surgical options remain in high demand. Patients now have more choices than ever, though long-term results still depend on maintaining a stable weight.
