Freiburg hosts free eye health event on glaucoma and AMD risks

A free public event on eye health will take place in Freiburg on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. Organised by specialists from Freiburg University Hospital, the evening will focus on common conditions like glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The information session runs from 6 to 7 p.m. in the lecture hall on Killianstraße. No registration is needed, and attendees will learn about early warning signs and the importance of regular check-ups. Many eye changes develop silently, only becoming noticeable once they have worsened.

Experts will discuss modern treatments for glaucoma, including minimally invasive surgery. The disease damages the optic nerve, often leading to gradual loss of peripheral vision. AMD, another key topic, causes distorted or blurred central vision. The event follows recent advancements in eye research. At the Gießen + Marburg Retina Meeting on March 24, 2026, scientists presented gene therapy approaches such as mRNA-based methods, gene editing, and optogenetics. Studies also explored the role of the complement system in AMD and its effects on vascular barriers.

The evening aims to raise awareness about preventable vision loss. Attendees will leave with knowledge of symptoms, treatments, and the latest research. Early detection and intervention remain critical in preserving long-term eye health.
