Fribourg proposes sweeping ban on disposable vapes to protect youth and environment

The canton of Fribourg is considering a ban on single-use electronic cigarettes, or vapes, as part of wider restrictions on tobacco and vaping products. A public consultation, launched by the State Council, aims to tighten advertising rules and prevent free giveaways of these items. The move follows growing concerns over health risks and environmental harm linked to disposable vapes.

Under the draft legislation, advertising for tobacco and e-cigarettes would be prohibited in public spaces and certain indoor areas. Free samples of these products would also be banned. The proposals specifically target disposable vapes, which experts argue appeal to young people because of their sweet flavours.

Fribourg is not alone in pushing for stricter controls. Five cantons—Geneva, Valais, Basel-Stadt, Bern, and Fribourg—are either enforcing or discussing similar bans. Geneva and Valais have already introduced restrictions, while Basel-City and Bern are exploring measures to halt the sale, distribution, and production of disposable vapes.

To enforce age restrictions, the Fribourg plan includes undercover test purchases. Authorities want to ensure retailers comply with laws designed to keep these products away from minors. The consultation remains open as officials gather feedback before finalising the rules.

If approved, the new regulations would mark a significant step in controlling disposable vapes across multiple Swiss cantons. The bans aim to reduce youth vaping and limit environmental damage from discarded devices. Public feedback will shape the final legislation before implementation.
