German Hospital Debuts AI-Powered Robot for Ultra-Precise Spinal Surgery

Wolfsburg Municipal Hospital has become the first known facility in Germany to introduce the Loop-X imaging robot with Curve navigation technology. The system, designed for spinal surgery, promises more precise and safer operations. Nearly one million euros were invested to bring this advanced technology to the hospital's operating theatres. The Loop-X robot generates real-time 2D and 3D scans during surgery, linking them with navigation systems for accurate implant placement. This allows surgeons to perform gentler, minimally invasive procedures with shorter operating times. Patients also benefit from reduced blood loss and lower radiation exposure.

The system's mobility means it can be moved between different operating rooms, cutting radiation risks for medical staff as well. At Wolfsburg Hospital, the technology will primarily support spine surgery, orthopaedics, and trauma surgery—particularly for complex pelvic operations.

Funding for the Loop-X came from a mix of municipal grants and the Hospital Structure Fund. The investment is part of the hospital's wider push to modernise and attract young doctors and medical students. Officials hope the upgrade will raise the facility's profile beyond the local region. The new system is already in use, with successful applications reported in spinal surgery. Its precision and flexibility could expand its role in minimally invasive procedures on delicate structures. For now, Wolfsburg remains the only confirmed German hospital to adopt this technology.
