German Red Cross Unveils New Vehicle for Dignified Last-Wish Journeys

A new vehicle has been unveiled for the Wishes in Motion initiative, run by the German Red Cross in Gifhorn. The project, which grants last wishes to people in palliative care, has relied entirely on donations since its launch in 2017. The upgraded transport marks a major step forward for the volunteer-led effort. The initiative began in 2017 with a simple goal: to give those in palliative care a day beyond their usual routine. Whether visiting famous landmarks or attending personal events, the team has made 35 trips possible so far. Each journey carries its own emotional weight, shaped by the wishes of those involved.

The new vehicle replaces older transport and meets strict medical standards under DIN EN 1789 regulations. Unlike traditional ambulances, it features side windows and a more welcoming interior to improve passenger comfort. Inside, there’s space for a personal wheelchair and an in-cabin sound system, allowing for a more personalised experience. A team of 13 volunteers runs the project, funding everything through public donations. They see the new vehicle as a turning point, helping them stay closer to their original mission. The design changes reflect their focus on dignity and comfort for those they support.

The upgraded transport will allow Wishes in Motion to continue fulfilling last wishes across Germany. With no government funding, the project depends on ongoing donations to sustain its work. The volunteers remain committed to creating meaningful experiences for those in their final stages of life.
