German School and Fire Department Forge Career Paths for Future First Responders

Solingen's Geschwister-Scholl-Gesamtschule has teamed up with the city's professional fire department in a long-term partnership. The collaboration will give students practical experience in firefighting and emergency response. It also aims to boost career guidance in rescue, safety, and health sectors.

The school already focuses on first aid training, including bystander CPR, and takes part in national resuscitation events. Now, the partnership will expand opportunities with information sessions, themed weeks, and joint projects. Firefighters will also attend school events to engage directly with students.

From 2025, the fire department will introduce a staged training model. This will combine craft skills with fire-service-specific qualifications. Six apprenticeship positions for Notfallsanitäter (emergency paramedics) are planned in Solingen for that year.

A new EMT apprenticeship will follow in 2026, offering a direct route into the professional fire service. The partnership is designed to shape students' career paths while supporting the fire service's talent development.

The initiative strengthens ties between education and emergency services. Students gain real-world exposure to firefighting and medical response roles. Meanwhile, the fire department secures a pipeline of potential recruits for future operations.
