Recall of Food: Listeria is the Most Common Cause - Germany's food safety crisis deepens as recalls surge by 13% in 2025

Germany witnessed a significant increase in food product recalls in 2025, with 323 alerts issued, marking a 13% rise from the previous year. Contamination from harmful bacteria and foreign objects were the primary reasons for this surge.

The official lebensmittelwarnung.de portal published all 323 recalls, covering products deemed unsafe for consumption or use. Food items constituted 90% of cases, while non-food and cosmetic products made up 7.5% and 2.5%, respectively.

Pathogenic microorganisms accounted for nearly a third of the recalls. Listeria led the list with 43 reported cases, surpassing Salmonella, which had 27. Since 2024, Listeria has been the top pathogen in food recalls, posing serious risks—especially to pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems. Unlike many bacteria, it can thrive even in refrigerator temperatures.

Foreign object contamination also showed a steady increase over five years. RASFF data from the Bundesamt für Verbraucherschutz und Lebensmittelsicherheit (BVL) indicated cases rising from around 150 in 2021 to roughly 280 in 2025. Glass, metal, and plastic were the most common contaminants found in food products.

The 2025 figures underscore growing concerns over food safety in Germany. Listeria's dominance among pathogens and the persistent issue of foreign objects suggest ongoing challenges for manufacturers and regulators. Consumers are advised to check lebensmittelwarnung.de regularly for updates on recalled products.
