Fitness Studio Conglomerate LifeFit Continues Shopping Spree - Germany's gym boom accelerates as LifeFit acquires Just Fit in 2025
Germany's fitness industry is expanding rapidly, with memberships rising and large chains acquiring smaller studios. In 2025, 12.3 million people belonged to a gym—a 5.6% increase from the previous year. The latest move comes as LifeFit gains approval to take over Just Fit, a regional operator in the Rhineland.
The Federal Cartel Office has greenlit LifeFit's acquisition of Just Fit, a Cologne-based chain with 21 locations. This follows LifeFit's purchase of Elixia in 2023, bringing its total studios to over 200 nationwide. The deal is part of a broader trend, with major players like Basic-Fit and all-inclusive-Fitness also expanding through acquisitions.
Germany now has 9,647 fitness facilities, reflecting growing demand driven by health awareness and an ageing population. Many studios are rebranding as wellness centres, attracting more members. Yet independent gyms still thrive by offering tailored, local services that larger chains often lack. Investors see strong potential in the sector, as consolidation reshapes the market. While big operators dominate, smaller studios continue to fill niche roles in communities.
The LifeFit takeover of Just Fit marks another step in the industry's consolidation. With memberships climbing and chains expanding, the fitness market remains dynamic. Smaller studios, however, still hold their ground by focusing on personalised experiences.
