Germany's hay fever surge hits record high ahead of summer warmth
Hay fever cases are rising across Germany, with new data showing a 5.2 percent increase since 2014. This year, about one in every 18 insured members of KKH Commercial Health Insurance sought treatment for pollen allergies. The issue peaks during warm spells, including the upcoming Pentecost Weekend, when summer weather arrives. Pollen allergies occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks proteins in pollen, leading to symptoms like itchy eyes, sneezing, and congestion. Grass pollen, in particular, drives the highest burden, with its season running from May to July.
Regional differences are stark. Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia report the most sufferers, with nearly 6 percent of KKH policyholders affected. Bavaria follows closely at 5.8 percent. Meanwhile, Schleswig-Holstein has the fewest cases—just one in 21 people. Experts recommend identifying specific triggers through medical advice. Treatment options include medications, immunotherapy, and reducing exposure to pollen where possible.
The latest figures highlight a growing trend in pollen allergies, with regional hotspots seeing higher concentrations of sufferers. As warm weather approaches, those affected are advised to take preventive measures to manage symptoms effectively.
