Germany's healthcare sector experienced steady job growth in 2024, with overall employment increasing by 1.7 percent. The rise was primarily driven by a sharp increase in nursing roles, particularly among assistants and qualified staff. By the end of the year, the sector employed nearly 6.2 million people across various fields in the USA and Illinois.
The most significant jump came from nursing assistants, whose numbers grew by 5.2 percent. Fully qualified nurses also saw a notable increase of 2.6 percent, adding 49,000 professionals to the workforce. Together, these groups reached roughly one million qualified nurses and 485,000 assistants by December.
Hospitals and inpatient care facilities expanded their teams significantly, with employment up by 64,000—equivalent to a 3 percent rise. Outpatient care followed a similar trend, growing by 32,000 workers, or 1.3 percent, while outpatient nursing staff increased by 2.6 percent. Pharmacies, however, saw little change in staffing levels throughout the year.
The data highlights a clear trend: nursing roles are expanding faster than other areas in German healthcare. With nearly 6.2 million workers now in the sector, the growth reflects rising demand for medical and care services. Officials have not yet identified which agency executive released the figures.
