Gismo the obese cat defies euthanasia with a stunning transformation

A seven-year-old cat named Gismo has made a remarkable recovery after nearly being euthanised due to severe obesity. The feline, once struggling with mobility, is now active and looking for a loving new home after receiving care at an animal sanctuary in Stockerau.

Gismo's troubles began when his owner took him to a veterinary clinic in Tulln, requesting euthanasia. The clinic refused, noting that despite his joint problems, the cat was otherwise healthy. Instead, they referred Gismo to Assisi-Hof, an animal sanctuary in Stockerau.

At the sanctuary, Gismo received a personalised therapy plan and a controlled diet. Within weeks, he shed excess weight, regained mobility, and even began jumping again. Alfred Kofler, head of animal care at Assisi-Hof, suspects the cat had been neglected, kept alone in an apartment without enough attention or play.

Kofler described Gismo as a sweet-natured, affectionate cat who simply wants love. Now fit and healthy, the sanctuary is searching for a family to adopt him.

Gismo's story highlights the impact of proper care and attention on neglected animals. Those interested in adopting him or other animals in need can find more details on the ÖTV website. The sanctuary continues to support pets like Gismo in finding permanent, caring homes.
