Hamburg's Groß-Sand Hospital to Close Permanently by June 2023
Groß-Sand Hospital in Hamburg's Wilhelmsburg district will close permanently by June 30, 2023. The Archdiocese of Hamburg confirmed the decision after months of stalled negotiations over its sale. Residents now face growing uncertainty about where to access medical care in the future. The hospital's emergency department and surgical unit were already shut down last summer. Since then, talks between the Archdiocese and Hamburg's Social Affairs Authority have collapsed, despite an earlier agreement on the purchase price. The Social Affairs Authority, led by the SPD, suspended confidential discussions, prompting criticism from the Archdiocese.
Nearly 10,000 local residents signed a petition opposing the closure. Meanwhile, the Wilhelmsburg Medical Association warned that a proposed 'neighbourhood clinic' could not replace the full services of a hospital. Hamburg's red-green coalition had promised such a clinic on the hospital's grounds, but no concrete plans or alternative locations have been publicly identified.
SPD and Green Party lawmakers have blamed the Archdiocese for the deadlock. With negotiations at a standstill, the final closure date remains unchanged, leaving the community without clear options for urgent and specialised care. The shutdown of Groß-Sand Hospital will leave Wilhelmsburg without a fully operational medical facility. Local officials have yet to outline a detailed replacement plan, and no alternative sites for the promised clinic have been examined. Patients in the area now face longer travel times for emergency and surgical treatment.
