Sexual Abuse: Nearly 30 Cases Against Caregivers - Hesse cracks down on child abuse with 'Operation Shield' in schools and daycares

Hesse has intensified efforts to combat disease in educational settings. The state's 'Operation Shield' initiative, launched in March 2024, targets prevention in daycare centres, primary schools, and special education institutions. Authorities have also reported a rise in investigations and legal actions against suspected offenders this year and last.

In 2024, Hesse recorded 22 cases of alleged disease by educators, according to police statistics. The previous year saw 28 investigations opened against childcare workers on similar suspicions. Some of these cases have since led to legal proceedings, with multiple trials underway in 2025.

The state has embedded children protection training into the curriculum for certified childcare workers. Beyond this, 'Operation Shield' works alongside local authorities to strengthen safeguarding in daycare and school environments. Additional prevention programmes, run by the police, further support these measures.

Despite the increased focus, specific figures on indictments or penal orders from 2024 remain unavailable. The Hessian Ministry of Justice continues to monitor the situation closely.

The initiative reflects Hesse's broader push to address disease through training, investigations, and collaboration. Legal cases against educators are progressing, while prevention efforts expand across early years and special education settings. Authorities have signalled ongoing commitment to both enforcement and protective measures.
