Many everyday foods and drinks contain hidden calories that can lead to unintended weight gain. Academician Oksana Drapkina has highlighted how small dietary habits—like portion sizes and food choices—can add up over time. From sugary snacks to alcoholic drinks, these extra calories often go unnoticed but contribute significantly to daily intake.
Alcohol is one of the biggest sources of hidden calories, with a single litre of beer holding around 500 kcal. When paired with fatty foods, regular drinking can quickly lead to weight gain. Similarly, store-bought juices and concentrate-based drinks are packed with sugar, offering little fullness despite their high calorie count.
Processed foods also play a major role. Pre-packaged frozen meals, fast food, and even so-called 'fitness' snacks like muesli bars often contain high levels of sugar and fat. Condiments, dressings, and add-ons—such as sauces or toppings—can further increase calorie intake without people realising.
Drapkina recommends tracking portions of calorie-dense foods, including nuts and dried fruits, where the suggested daily amount is just 30 grams of nuts and 30-50 grams of dried fruit. White bread, another high-calorie item, should be eaten in moderation. To reduce hidden calories, she advises choosing minimally processed whole foods, cooking at home, and eating meals in stages rather than all at once.
Sugary drinks and desserts, such as energy drinks and sweetened yoghurts, are filled with 'empty' calories. These spike blood sugar quickly but leave people feeling unsatisfied, often leading to overeating later on.
Controlling hidden calories involves paying closer attention to portion sizes and food choices. Cutting back on sugary drinks, alcohol, and processed snacks can make a noticeable difference in daily intake. Small changes, like cooking at home and monitoring add-ons, may help manage weight more effectively over time.
