Hidden Obesity Crisis: Why Even Normal-Weight People Face Serious Health Risks

New research highlights a growing health concern: hidden obesity in people with a normal BMI. Studies show that excess abdominal fat, even in otherwise healthy-weight individuals, raises the risk of diabetes, hypertension, and poor cholesterol levels. The issue has worsened in recent years, particularly among younger populations due to pandemic-related lifestyle shifts.

Visceral fat, the deep fat wrapped around internal organs, poses serious risks regardless of overall weight. Data from 2021 to 2026 reveals a 15–25% rise in its prevalence among children and teens in the US, Germany, and the UK. Long-term studies like NHANES and KiGGS link this trend to reduced physical activity and dietary changes during the pandemic.

The problem extends to adults, with 21.7% of those with a normal BMI still carrying dangerous levels of visceral fat. This type of fat is metabolically active, releasing inflammatory substances that harm insulin function, disrupt cholesterol balance, and strain the liver. It also contributes to atherosclerosis by thickening artery walls, particularly in the carotid artery.

Experts warn that even slim individuals face a 1.8 times higher risk of diabetes and a 1.3 times higher risk of hypertension if their waist circumference is elevated. To combat this, monitoring waist size, eating whole foods, and combining strength training with high-intensity exercise are recommended.

The findings underscore that BMI alone does not guarantee good health. Visceral fat, often overlooked, significantly increases disease risks across all age groups. Public health measures now emphasise waist measurement and lifestyle changes to address this silent but widespread issue.
