How Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy Is Reshaping Weight Loss in Germany
Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) has become a standard weight-loss procedure in Germany for people with severe obesity. The surgery reduces the stomach to about 20% of its original size, limiting food intake. Around 200 to 300 bariatric centres across the country now offer it, though availability varies by region. LSG is usually recommended for patients with a BMI of 40 or higher. However, those with a BMI of 30 or above may also qualify if they have obesity-related conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnoea. Before surgery, patients undergo tests such as blood work, X-rays, and electrocardiograms. They must also follow a liquid protein diet and avoid certain medications.
The procedure itself takes about two hours. Surgeons make small abdominal incisions to remove roughly two-thirds of the stomach, leaving a sleeve-shaped pouch. Recovery time varies, with most returning to work in two to three weeks, though full healing can take up to eight weeks.
After surgery, patients start with an all-liquid diet before gradually moving to puréed, soft, and solid foods. However, complications can occur, including staple line leaks, bleeding, infections, or nutrient deficiencies. The cost of LSG in 2017 averaged around $11,500, though prices ranged from $7,400 to $33,500.
Access to the procedure differs across Germany. Urban areas like North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria, and Baden-Württemberg have more centres than rural eastern states. Exact numbers remain unrecorded, as no central database tracks them. LSG remains a widely used treatment for severe obesity, with hundreds of centres performing it nationwide. The surgery offers a structured path to weight loss but requires careful preparation and monitoring. Patients must follow dietary guidelines and watch for potential complications during recovery.
