Maslenitsa celebrations are in full swing, with families enjoying pancakes as the centrepiece of the festivities. While the week-long event brings indulgence, health experts are offering tips to keep traditions balanced and nutritious.
Endocrinologist Olga Tsymbalova recommends sticking to two or three plain pancakes a day. She warns that heavy toppings like honey, condensed milk, and jam can strain the pancreas. Instead, savoury fillings such as cottage cheese, cabbage, or meat turn pancakes into a full meal—though adults should still limit portions to two to four.
For a lighter recipe, Tsymbalova suggests using whole-grain flour and mixing it with water, kefir, or whey. When frying, lard or clarified butter is a healthier choice than vegetable oil, even for children over one year old.
Beyond food, staying active keeps the celebrations lively. Traditional dances like the khorovod or outdoor activities such as skiing help maintain energy and balance during the week of feasting.
With small adjustments, Maslenitsa can remain both festive and health-conscious. Choosing better ingredients and staying active ensures the holiday stays enjoyable without overindulgence. The focus remains on tradition—just with a mindful approach to food and movement.
