I-580 in Livermore shut down after mental health crisis on overpass

A major traffic disruption unfolded on Interstate 580 in Livermore on Friday afternoon. Police activity led to the closure of all lanes in both directions, causing significant delays for drivers. The incident began around 2 p.m. near the Highway 84/Isabel Avenue junction. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) initially shut down the eastbound lanes of I-580 at state Highway 84. By 2:35 p.m., both eastbound and westbound lanes were fully closed. Officers were responding to a person in distress on an overpass, later confirmed to be experiencing a mental health crisis.

Motorists were urged to seek alternative routes, including SR-84 and I-680 towards Highway 4. Congestion built rapidly, with eastbound traffic backing up past Dublin and Pleasanton as far as Rowell Ranch by 4 p.m. The situation was resolved without incident, and all lanes reopened by 3:52 p.m.

The closure caused hours of delays for commuters travelling through the Livermore area. Traffic flow returned to normal once the lanes were cleared, but residual congestion lingered into the early evening. Authorities confirmed no injuries or further disruptions occurred during the operation.
