India's bold plan to control HIV by 2027 targets key regions

India is stepping up efforts to control HIV by 2027 under its Mission AIDS Suraksha initiative. The government has identified 60 high-priority districts across the country, with a strong focus on the Northeastern region.

The Northeastern states play a key role in India's national HIV response. All seven states in the region—Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura—contain at least one of the 60 designated high-priority districts. Sikkim, however, is not included in this list.

The mission aims to bring HIV under control by December 1, 2027. Authorities are directing resources and prevention programmes toward these districts to meet the target.

With the Northeastern region hosting multiple high-priority districts, the government's strategy focuses on targeted interventions. The success of Mission AIDS Suraksha will depend on sustained efforts in these areas over the next three years.
