J-1 Visa Waiver Applications Open for 2025—Doctors Have Until December 13

The application window for J-1 visa waivers in 2025 has now opened. Doctors seeking a waiver can submit their requests from 1 October until 13 December 2024. The review process will then follow a structured timeline with clear priorities for different medical roles.

Applications will be assessed between January and February 2025. Successful candidates will receive notifications in March. The selection process follows three priority tiers.

Top consideration goes to primary care physicians working in out-patient or ambulatory care. These roles must be based in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) or Medically Underserved Areas/Populations (MUA/Ps). The second priority covers physicians, including specialists, employed at specific facilities. These include critical access hospitals, small rural hospitals, and federally qualified health centres. Also eligible are those at certified rural health clinics or primary care out-patient sites not located in HPSAs or MUA/Ps. The third tier includes specialty physicians in an MUA/P or HPSA. It also covers Flex 10 slots, depending on availability and demonstrated need.

The deadline for submissions is 13 December 2024. Reviews will begin in January, with final decisions communicated by March. No data on previous years' allocations or priority distribution has been released.
