Kazakh University Revives Nauryz Traditions with AI and Cultural Pride
Nauryz, one of Central Asia's oldest festivals, has taken on a fresh academic twist at Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University. On March 18, the institution marked the Day of National Clothing, blending tradition with modern education. The celebration aimed to teach students about Kazakh heritage while embracing new technologies and cultural practices. The event centred on Kazakh national attire, with students and faculty displaying garments like the tubeteika, chapan robes, and detailed ornaments. Each piece was presented to highlight its historical roots and present-day importance. Organisers also staged a theatrical version of the Syrga Salu ritual, explaining its role as a symbol of prosperity and protection in Kazakh culture.
Technology played a key part in the festivities. Artificial intelligence was used to create a digital fashion show, merging the faces of participants with images of traditional costumes. This approach brought a contemporary edge to the celebration while keeping its cultural essence intact. The university's activities mirrored Kazakhstan's broader *Nauryznama* concept—a 10-day cultural programme from March 14 to 23. Each day focuses on different themes, from spirituality to social unity, reflecting Nauryz's core values of renewal and harmony. The celebration at KazNMU wrapped up with a lively fair and closing speeches from the Head of the Department, who emphasised the event's role in fostering student engagement and cultural pride. Beyond academia, the *Syrga Salu* ritual has gained popularity in modern Kazakh life. It frequently appears in weddings, festivals like Astana's Nomad Games, and social media, particularly on platforms like TikTok. While less common in everyday urban settings, the tradition has seen renewed interest, especially among Kazakh communities in Russia and Turkey.
The Day of National Clothing at KazNMU combined education, innovation, and cultural preservation. Students left with a deeper understanding of Kazakh traditions, from clothing to rituals like Syrga Salu. The event also reinforced the university's commitment to keeping heritage alive in a rapidly changing world.
