A high-fat, low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet has gained popularity for weight loss and epilepsy management. However, its long-term effects on health remain poorly understood. Recent research on mice now raises concerns about potential risks over time. The ketogenic diet involves consuming around 90% of calories from fat, forcing the body into a state called ketosis. This approach has shown short-term weight loss in mice and helps reduce seizures in epilepsy patients. Yet, long-term studies in rodents reveal troubling outcomes: weight gain, glucose intolerance, disrupted insulin secretion, high cholesterol, and fatty liver disease.
These findings match reports from epilepsy patients on long-term ketogenic diets, who often develop cardiovascular diseases, high blood fat levels, and pancreatitis. The diet may also affect men and women differently, adding another layer of complexity. Despite its use in weight management and diabetes prevention, health authorities remain cautious. The German Society for Nutrition advises healthy adults to get at least half their energy from carbohydrates—a stark contrast to the ketogenic approach.
The study suggests the ketogenic diet does not provide lasting weight loss and may pose serious metabolic risks. While it remains a valid treatment for epilepsy, its broader use for obesity or diabetes lacks strong long-term evidence. Further research is needed to clarify its safety and effectiveness over time.
