Lidl's Alesto Trail Mix Tops Safety Tests With Zero Detectable Pesticides
A recent lab analysis of 29 trail mix products has highlighted Lidl's Alesto Selection Studentenfutter Classic as the standout performer. The budget-friendly snack earned the highest rating of 'very good' after tests found no detectable pesticides, mineral oils, or harmful additives. This result contrasts sharply with some well-known brands and even eco-certified alternatives, which showed concerning levels of contamination.
The independent tests, conducted by organisations like Öko-Test and Stiftung Warentest, have repeatedly praised Lidl's Alesto product since 2020. Unlike competitors such as Aldi's Gut Bio or Rewe's Ja!, which occasionally contained higher residues, the Alesto mix maintained consistently low levels of contaminants—including heavy metals and mycotoxins. Data from 2023 to 2025 confirmed further improvements, reinforcing its reputation for safety.
Other products fared far worse. Öltje Studentenfutter Original, a long-established brand, was rated 'poor' after tests revealed nine different pesticides, three of which are classified as particularly hazardous. The same product also contained 'forever chemicals' (PFAS pesticides), which persist in the environment and pose long-term risks. Even organic options struggled: Morgenland Bio Kerniges Studentenfutter received an 'inadequate' rating due to harmful mineral oil residues (MOAH).
The findings also raised broader concerns about food safety. A single product can legally contain up to 100 different pesticides, even if each remains below individual legal limits. When combined, these substances can create a 'cocktail effect', increasing toxicity beyond what single-ingredient tests predict. Brazil nuts, a common ingredient in trail mixes, add another risk—they can absorb radioactive elements like radium from the soil, posing health threats to vulnerable groups.
Lidl's Alesto mix stood out not just for its clean results but also for its affordability. Among the 29 products tested, only three conventional options were completely pesticide-free. The Alesto selection was one of them, offering consumers a safer choice without a premium price tag.
The latest analysis places Lidl's Alesto Selection Studentenfutter Classic at the top of the market for both safety and value. Its lack of detectable contaminants sets it apart from brands like Öltje, which contained multiple hazardous pesticides, and even some organic products that failed due to mineral oil residues. For shoppers seeking a low-risk snack, the Alesto mix provides a verified alternative with no compromise on cost or quality.
