New Speed Limit 30 Rules in Mainz - Mainz eases nighttime speed limits to cut noise for 5,000 residents

Mainz city council has adjusted speed limits on several major roads after approving a noise action plan in October 2024. The changes aim to reduce excessive noise affecting around 5,000 residents. However, not all proposed restrictions were implemented as originally suggested.

The 30 km/h limit on Parcusstraße and Kaiserstraße remains in place at all times. But on the busy Rheinachse, the rule has been relaxed—it now applies only from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM instead of 24/7.

The city had briefly suspended the speed limit for about a month earlier this year. This followed a legal challenge, though the dispute focused on nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) levels rather than noise concerns.

Janina Steinkrüger, the Green Party's environmental and mobility commissioner, had pushed for wider 30 km/h zones. She criticised the Legal Affairs Committee for rejecting some resident-backed restrictions. According to her, the committee favoured faster travel times over reducing noise-related health risks for locals.

The updated speed limits reflect a compromise between traffic flow and noise reduction. Residents near the affected roads will experience quieter nights, though daytime noise levels may remain unchanged. The council's decision follows months of debate and a temporary legal suspension of the original rules.
