Rose Monday parade in Mainz stopped due to a drunk man - Mainz's Rose Monday marred by 80 alcohol-related emergencies and underage drinking

Mainz's Rose Monday celebrations saw a high number of alcohol-related incidents this year. Emergency services treated 323 people, with around 80 cases linked to excessive drinking. The traditional carnival parade was even paused briefly after a man in his 40s collapsed from intoxication.

The festivities began with heavy alcohol consumption, leading to a surge in medical responses. A woman in her mid-20s was found unconscious at the main train station, while a 14-year-old girl was among 30 underage drinkers taken to hospital. Another person suffered serious injuries after falling down stairs while heavily drunk.

Police confiscated or disposed of roughly 190 litres of alcohol during the event. Beyond alcohol-related cases, 45 people were hospitalised for other reasons, including cuts from broken glass, fights, falls, and seizures. One emergency responder also suffered a minor hand injury while breaking up a fight.

Over 500 volunteer and professional emergency personnel, along with police and public order officers, worked for nearly 14 hours to maintain safety. Despite the incidents, total hospital transports dropped to 45, down from 53 in the previous year.

The celebrations highlighted the risks of excessive drinking, with many cases involving underage participants. Emergency teams managed the situation, though alcohol-related incidents remained a major concern. Authorities will likely review safety measures ahead of future events.
