Massive Minden fire destroys businesses, prompts safety closures and air quality checks
A large fire broke out in Minden early Sunday morning, destroying a building that housed an auto repair shop and a printing company's warehouse. Emergency crews worked through Monday to bring the blaze under control, with around 240 responders involved in the operation. The cause of the fire remains unknown as police continue their investigation.
The fire started in a hall complex on Schumannstraße in the early hours of January 25, 2026. Flames engulfed the structure, prompting a massive response from firefighters and emergency services. Though most air quality tests later showed no dangerous levels of pollutants, traces of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were found at two of the seven sampling sites.
As a precaution, the city has closed the outdoor area of the Hahlen daycare centre and the playground on Uranusstraße. Officials plan to clean all playground equipment and replace the top layer of sand in the daycare's outdoor space. Children will not be allowed to play outside there until the ground thaws.
Residents living near the fire site have also been advised not to let their children build snowmen. Despite no exceedance of pollutant limits, authorities are taking additional steps to ensure safety.
The fire's origin is still unclear, and police are working to determine how it started. Preventive measures, including playground closures and sand replacement, will remain in place until further notice. The city continues to monitor air quality and safety conditions in the affected areas.
