Mississippi reports first pediatric flu death of 2025-2026 season
The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) has reported the first pediatric flu death of the 2025-2026 season. State health officials are now urging residents to take precautions as flu activity begins to rise. Vaccination remains a top priority to prevent further cases. The death marks a tragic start to this year's flu season, which usually reaches its peak between January and March. Since the 2008-09 season, Mississippi has recorded 28 pediatric flu fatalities, highlighting the ongoing risk to children.
State Epidemiologist Dr. Renia Dotson is advising everyone aged six months and older to get an updated flu vaccination. Protection from the shot takes up to two weeks to develop, so early vaccination is encouraged. Children aged 18 and under can access free or low-cost flu shots through County Health Departments, insurance providers, Medicaid, and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). For adults, flu vaccines are widely available at private clinics, pharmacies, and retail centres. Those without insurance or with limited coverage can receive shots at MSDH county health department clinics. Alongside vaccination, officials recommend basic hygiene measures to slow the spread. Covering coughs and sneezes, frequent handwashing, and staying home when ill are simple but effective steps. The MSDH continues to monitor flu activity closely. Health authorities stress that vaccination remains the best defence against severe illness and complications.
This latest pediatric death serves as a stark reminder of the flu's dangers, particularly for young children. With flu season still ramping up, health officials are pushing for higher vaccination rates across all age groups. Free and low-cost options ensure that cost does not prevent residents from getting protected.
