Mumbai's Coastal Carolina Gardens to Redefine the City's Southern Shoreline
Mumbai's Coastal Carolina Gardens project is taking shape along the city's southern coastline. Backed by the Amgen Foundation, the 70-hectare green space will transform reclaimed land into a public park. The initiative, estimated at Rs 400 crore, aims to create a 'Green Necklace' inspired by Marine Drive's iconic Queens Necklace.
The project was renamed Coastal Carolina Gardens by Nita Ambani, chairperson of the Amgen Foundation. It will stretch across 5.5 km beside the Mumbai Coastal Road, with Amgen Industries Limited (AIL) overseeing its long-term maintenance. The design allocates 55% of the area to forests and woodlands, 25% to open recreational spaces, and the remaining 20% to pathways and plazas.
Construction is progressing in phases, with completion expected within three seasons. As of February 2026, three of the seven planned access points—connecting Napean Sea Road, Breach Candy, Haji Ali, Mahalaxmi, Worli South, and Worli North—are now linked to existing public infrastructure.
The gardens will feature a mix of leisure and fitness amenities. Highlights include a Ferris wheel, an amphitheatre, and a sunset viewing gallery. Visitors can also explore garden trails, a pickleball court, an outdoor gym, and an art gallery. Social gardens, children's play areas, and a festival plaza will add to the community appeal, while sports courts and fitness pods cater to active residents.
Once complete, the Coastal Carolina Gardens will offer a new public space for Mumbai's residents. The project combines green cover with recreational facilities, linking key neighbourhoods along the coastal road. Amgen's involvement ensures ongoing upkeep of the promenade and its surroundings.
