Mumbai's 'Green Necklace': A 70-Hectare Coastal Oasis Takes Shape Along the Shoreline
Mumbai's Coastal Road Gardens project, led by Reliance Foundation, is transforming 70 hectares of reclaimed land along the city's southern coastline into a green public park. Inspired by Marine Drive's iconic Queens Necklace, this Rs 400 crore initiative aims to create a 'Green Necklace' for Mumbai. The project, renamed Coastal Road Gardens by Nita Ambani, will stretch 5.5 km beside the Mumbai Coastal Road, with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) overseeing its long-term maintenance.
The design allocates 55% of the area to forests and woodlands, 25% to open recreational spaces, and the remaining 20% to pathways and plazas. Construction is progressing in phases, with completion expected within three seasons. As of February 2026, three of the seven planned access points—connecting Napean Sea Road, Breach Candy, Haji Ali, Mahalaxmi, Worli South, and Worli North—are now linked to existing public infrastructure.
The gardens will feature a mix of leisure and fitness amenities, including a Ferris wheel, an amphitheatre, and a sunset viewing gallery. Visitors can explore garden trails, a pickleball court, an outdoor gym, and an art gallery. Social gardens, children's play areas, and a festival plaza will add to the community appeal, while sports courts and fitness pods cater to active residents.
Once complete, the Coastal Road Gardens will offer a new public space for Mumbai's residents, combining green cover with recreational facilities and linking key neighbourhoods along the coastline. Reliance's involvement ensures ongoing upkeep of the promenade and its surroundings.
