Murang'a Launches Kenya's Largest Digital Healthcare Network for Rural Patients

Murang’a County has rolled out Kenya’s largest public digital healthcare programme. The initiative connects 170 health facilities through advanced telemedicine and satellite technology. Officials will launch the system on 28 May 2026 at the county’s telemedicine hub. The programme links hospitals and clinics via Paratus Kenya’s Essential Access platform and Starlink satellite connectivity. This setup allows hundreds of daily virtual consultations, with capacity for 450 to 600 patients each day. By the end of 2026, another 302 facilities will join the network.

The system supports remote specialist consultations and digital health reporting. Patients in rural areas will benefit from faster diagnoses, lower travel costs, and smoother referrals. The initiative aligns with Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage goals and Murang’a’s broader healthcare modernisation plans.

Nearly 1.2 million residents, mostly in remote communities, stand to gain from improved access to specialists. The county’s investment aims to strengthen disease monitoring and overall service delivery across the region. The launch on 28 May marks a key step in expanding digital healthcare in Murang’a. With 170 facilities already online and hundreds more to follow, the programme will increase specialist access for rural patients. Daily consultations are expected to rise as the network grows.
