Nagaon's bold push to combat maternal malnutrition through worker training
A major training programme on maternal nutrition has taken place in Nagaon district. The event aimed to strengthen the skills of frontline workers in tackling malnutrition among pregnant women and children. It was organised jointly by Assam Agricultural University, UNICEF, the District Administration, and the Women and Child Development Department.
The training focused on nutrition-sensitive agriculture, dietary diversity, and micronutrient supplementation. Experts from Assam Agricultural University and UNICEF led practical sessions to update Anganwadi and health workers on the latest strategies. Topics included community-based approaches to improve maternal and child health.
District Social Welfare Officer Bholanath Pegu presented Nagaon's current nutritional indicators. He also outlined government schemes designed to reduce maternal mortality and improve nutrition. Additional District Commissioner Devahuti Bora stressed the importance of proper maternal nutrition for both mothers and newborns. District Coordinator of Nutrition Mission Abhinav Bora called for stronger interdepartmental cooperation. He urged all stakeholders to work together in providing better support and counselling for pregnant and lactating mothers. The initiative aligns with the broader goals of the Nutrition Mission in Nagaon, particularly in rural areas.
The programme equipped frontline workers with updated knowledge and practical tools to combat maternal malnutrition. While no public data exists on the exact number of trained workers, the effort is expected to enhance nutrition programmes across the district. Officials have emphasised the need for continued collaboration to ensure lasting improvements in health outcomes.
