Falls remain one of the most common causes of injury among older adults. To tackle this issue, a new program called Strong & Stable is teaching safer-falling techniques to active adults over 55. The initiative combines methods from judo and stunt training to help reduce the risk of harm. The Strong & Stable program takes place in a padded, low-impact environment. It focuses on progressive drills that teach participants how to position their bodies to absorb impact. The goal is to prepare older adults for falls and minimise potential injuries.
Matt Scheib, owner of Atlanta Judo Midtown and co-founder of The Falling Class, recently demonstrated basic safer-falling techniques. Scheib, who is also an Emmy-nominated stunt performer, brings expertise from both judo and stunt work to the program. By March 2026, over 500 locations across the USA had begun offering similar training. These include YMCA centres, senior community programmes, and facilities running workshops like Matter of Balance or Stepping On. Each session aims to build confidence and physical resilience in older adults.
The program's techniques are designed to make falls less dangerous for those over 55. With growing availability at local centres, more older adults can now access training that may help prevent serious injuries. The approach blends practical skills with a focus on safety and preparedness.
