New volunteers step up to support seniors in Gifhorn communities

A new group of volunteers is ready to support older adults in the Gifhorn area. Thirteen people completed their training as DUO Senior Companions in March, preparing them to assist seniors with daily tasks and companionship. The service is now available in several nearby towns at no cost to participants.

The six-day training programme took place in Gifhorn, equipping volunteers with the skills to help older residents. Their roles include accompanying seniors to appointments and running errands like shopping. The initiative aims to provide personalised support based on individual needs.

Volunteers are now being matched with seniors in Wittingen, Gifhorn, Hankensbüttel, Brome, Meinersen, Wesendorf, and Papenteich. The first pairings have already begun, connecting older adults with companions who can offer regular assistance and social interaction. The DUO Senior Companions programme focuses on improving quality of life for older people through practical help and friendship. Organisers have confirmed there are still open spots for those interested in receiving support or volunteering.

The newly trained companions will start working with seniors in the coming weeks. Their services will remain free and adapted to each person's requirements. Residents in the listed towns can now request assistance through the programme.
