Newcastle's Magdalene Square Proposes Eco-Friendly Homes for Older Residents
A new residential development named Magdalene Square has been proposed for Newcastle. The scheme, led by the St Mary Magdalene & Holy Jesus Trust and Meldrum Construction, will focus on housing for older residents while also including a small number of family homes. Planning permission has been submitted by JDDK Architects on behalf of the partnership. The project will primarily offer accommodation designed for older people, with features supporting lifetime occupation. Apartments will include flexible bathroom layouts to adapt to changing needs over time. Ground-floor units will come with private patios and gardens, while upper-floor apartments will have balconies.
Sustainability is central to the design. A 'fabric first' approach will ensure high energy efficiency, with air source heat pumps providing heating. Low surface temperature (LST) radiators and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery will further reduce energy waste. In addition to the main apartments, three family houses will be built. These will feature south-facing gardens and patios, along with secure cycle storage.
The development combines accessible living for older residents with eco-friendly technology. If approved, Magdalene Square will add a mix of sustainable homes to Newcastle's housing stock. The scheme's design aims to balance comfort, flexibility, and environmental responsibility.
