Nizhny Novgorod warns of 'mouse fever' as dacha season approaches
Health authorities in Nizhny Novgorod have issued a warning about hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), commonly called 'mouse fever'. The alert comes as residents prepare for the dacha season after winter, when rodents often seek shelter in unoccupied homes and outbuildings. HFRS spreads primarily through mice, which carry the virus and contaminate surfaces with their droppings. Experts highlight that private homes and dachas face higher risks because rodents overwinter in these structures. Natalya Sadykova, deputy chief state sanitary doctor for the region, stressed the need to prevent infestations to lower infection chances.
Before moving in, authorities urge thorough cleaning of dachas, including damp wiping and ventilation. Respiratory protection, like masks, should be worn during cleaning to avoid inhaling dust or pathogens. Regular waste removal, building maintenance, and blocking rodent nesting sites are also critical preventive measures. Symptoms requiring urgent medical care include high fever, intense headaches, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, and pain in the lower back or joints. No confirmed HFRS cases have been reported in the Nizhny Novgorod region so far in 2023.
The warning aims to raise awareness before the dacha season begins. Proper cleaning, rodent control, and prompt medical attention for symptoms remain key to reducing HFRS risks. Residents are advised to follow the guidelines to protect their health during the warmer months.
