Nobel Winner Richard Axel Resigns Over Ties to Jeffrey Epstein

Nobel Prize-winning scientist Richard Axel has stepped down as co-director of a neuroscience institute at Columbia University. His resignation follows years of scrutiny over his ties to the late financier Epstein. Axel admitted the relationship was a 'serious error in judgment' and apologised for damaging trust.

Axel, a respected professor and researcher, had been a frequent visitor to Epstein's Manhattan home. He also acted as a liaison between Epstein and Columbia officials, particularly in areas related to admissions and philanthropy. Despite this, no allegations of wrongdoing have been made against Axel in connection with Epstein.

In a public statement, Axel acknowledged that his association with Epstein had 'compromised the trust' of colleagues, students, and friends. The scientist's departure comes years after Epstein's death in August 2019, with no direct impact on scientific collaborations linked to Epstein's past connections. Major document releases under the Epstein Files Transparency Act began in December 2025, long after Axel's involvement had ended.

Axel's resignation marks the end of his leadership role at the neuroscience institute. His apology underscores the lasting consequences of his association with Epstein. The university has not announced any further actions related to the matter.
