More than 140 Children at Elementary School Infected with Norovirus - Norovirus outbreak infects 190+ at Bad Laer schools amid hygiene crackdown
A norovirus outbreak has struck schools in Bad Laer, affecting over 140 children and six teachers at a primary school. The virus has also spread to a nearby secondary school, where 53 students have fallen ill. Health officials confirmed the first cases on Tuesday, with lab results arriving the following day.
The outbreak began with reports of sudden, severe vomiting and diarrhoea among pupils. Noroviruses, known for their high contagion, often cause acute gastroenteritis through contact with contaminated surfaces or objects. Despite investigations, the source of this outbreak remains unknown.
School meals have been ruled out as a likely cause. Classes will continue as planned, but stricter hygiene measures have been introduced to limit further spread. Infected students must stay home for at least 48 hours after symptoms end.
As of February 20, 2026, the virus has affected 12 schools and educational institutions across the Osnabrück region. Most cases are concentrated in Osnabrück city and surrounding districts, including Osnabrück Land.
The norovirus outbreak has disrupted routines in Bad Laer's schools, with over 190 pupils and teachers infected so far. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation while reinforcing hygiene protocols. Officials urge parents to keep symptomatic children at home to prevent further transmission.
