Philippines speeds up medical aid for poor and middle-class families

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has called for faster and more efficient delivery of medical aid to poor and middle-class Filipinos. He stressed that government support must reach those in need without unnecessary delays or complications. The push comes as officials review ways to improve the Medical Assistance to Indigent and Financially Incapitated Patients Program (MAIFIP). The president’s directive follows concerns over long queues, repetitive paperwork, and cumbersome processes that slow down access to healthcare. Executive Secretary Ralph Recto and Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa recently met to address these issues. They agreed that streamlining procedures would help ensure funds reach patients more quickly.

MAIFIP provides financial support for hospital bills, medicines, and diagnostic tests to Filipinos who cannot afford them. The programme’s budget has risen from PHP41.16 billion to PHP51.6 billion under the 2026 General Appropriations Act. Officials now aim to maximise technology to make services faster, more transparent, and easier to access. The government emphasised that the true measure of public service lies in how easily people can obtain help. Even with sufficient funding, complex processes can prevent those in need from receiving benefits. Expanding digital platforms is seen as a key step in cutting red tape and improving efficiency for patients across the country.

The changes aim to make medical assistance more accessible to both low-income and middle-class families. By reducing paperwork and using technology, the government expects quicker and fairer support for Filipinos facing healthcare costs. The updated MAIFIP programme is set to roll out with these improvements in place.
