SEK Deployment in Duisburg: Man Shot with Knife - Police shoot armed man after standoff at German mental health facility

A police tactical unit shot and wounded a man during an operation at a mental health facility in Duisburg. The incident began early in the morning when officers responded to reports of an armed individual barricaded in the attic. One officer suffered minor injuries before the suspect was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds.

Police were called to the residential facility at around 8:00 a.m. after receiving reports that a man had armed himself with a knife. He had locked himself in the attic, prompting a large-scale response.

The special operations unit (SEK) arrived and attempted to make contact through an attic window using a fire department ladder truck. During the confrontation, one of the first officers on the scene sustained a minor injury.

Details of what followed remain unclear, but officers eventually opened fire, wounding the man. He was then transported to hospital for treatment. In 2023, similar incidents involving police interventions led to around 254 people being taken to psychiatric institutions under involuntary measures.

The injured suspect is now receiving medical care, while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the shooting. The officer who was hurt has been treated for minor injuries. Police have not yet released further details about the sequence of events.
