Primogene's Breakthrough: Lab-Made Human Milk Sugars for Health and Beyond

Primogene, a Leipzig-based biotech startup, is making strides in producing bioidentical human milk sugars at scale. The company's enzymatic technology also extends to skincare and pharmaceutical applications. Early revenue has already been generated through partnerships and pre-orders, with cosmetic ingredients set to launch later this year.

The startup's origins trace back to an idea for nutrient-rich additives in premature infant nutrition. These human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs)—the third-largest solid component in human milk—support immune function and cognitive development. Primogene's technology ensures the molecules are molecularly identical to those found naturally in the body.

Testing is underway in collaboration with Leipzig's Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology. Beyond infant nutrition, the company explores applications in disease prevention for adults. Its enzymatic methods also produce bioidentical compounds for skincare and pharmaceuticals.

Primogene has secured funding from biotech-focused investors, including Climate Founders, alongside grants from Saxony and Leipzig. The startup gained further recognition by placing third in the 2024 Saxon Founders' Award. According to Susanne Stump of futureSAX, Saxony's innovation ecosystem fosters globally competitive solutions.

As of 2024, Primogene's portfolio includes AI-driven genomic tools for oncology and rare diseases. However, no specific first customers or partners have been publicly confirmed.

Primogene continues to expand its biotech applications, from infant nutrition to pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. The company's early revenue and ongoing collaborations signal progress in scaling its technology. With Saxony's support and growing industry visibility, further developments are expected in the coming year.
