Putin unveils bold 2036 plan to transform Russia's Far East economy

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the creation of a new socioeconomic strategy for the Far Eastern Federal District. The plan will cover development up to 2030, with long-term projections reaching 2036. Officials must submit a draft by July 15 and finalise approval by August 1. The outgoing strategy, which ran until 2025, delivered notable progress. Annual housing completions rose by 1.5 times, while mineral extraction grew 1.4 times—both outpacing national averages. Now, the updated plan aims to push further by addressing key challenges and opportunities.

The new strategy centres on five priorities: fixing infrastructure bottlenecks, kickstarting a fresh wave of investment and tech adoption, and advancing science and innovation. It also targets better living standards and stronger climate resilience. At its core, the goal is a high-tech, diversified economy with modern infrastructure to support population growth and deeper ties with Asia-Pacific partners. For the Magadan Region, the focus is on sustainable growth as a mining and logistics powerhouse. Plans include tapping into new mineral deposits and building service hubs for resource firms. These moves are expected to lift wages and economic activity despite the area’s tough natural conditions. Transport upgrades will play a major role. Magadan’s infrastructure will see railway expansions, new transshipment terminals, and modern warehouses. Beyond logistics, the strategy prioritises healthcare improvements to cut working-age mortality and raise life expectancy. Education reforms are also part of the push to enhance quality of life.

The finalised strategy will guide the Far Eastern Federal District’s transformation over the next decade. It seeks to drive economic efficiency, regional development, and higher living standards. Implementation will align with broader national projects and long-term goals.
