Russia confirms new mpox case linked to African travel

Russian health authorities have confirmed a new case of mpox, bringing the country's total to 17 since 2024. The infected individual had recently traveled from Africa, where the virus remains widespread. Officials have moved quickly to trace and monitor all close contacts of the patient.

The latest case was identified using domestic test kits developed by Rospotrebnadzor, Russia's consumer health watchdog. These kits allow for rapid diagnosis, helping to isolate infected individuals before the virus can spread further.

Mpox primarily spreads through direct physical contact with an infected person or through contaminated objects. Globally, the majority of cases outside Africa—99%—involve adults over 18, with 97% occurring in men. Russia's recorded cases so far have all been linked to travel from high-risk regions, with no evidence of wider community transmission.

In response to the new infection, Rospotrebnadzor has placed all identified contacts under a 21-day observation period. They have been instructed to self-isolate and check their temperature daily. If any symptoms appear, medical teams will intervene immediately, and the patient's home will be disinfected to prevent further spread.

The situation in Africa remains severe, with over 50,800 mpox cases reported in the past year alone. The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and Sierra Leone account for the highest numbers.

Russia's latest mpox case follows a pattern of travel-related infections, with no signs of local outbreaks. Authorities continue to rely on rapid testing and strict isolation measures to contain the virus. The ongoing monitoring of contacts aims to prevent any potential spread within the country.
