Samsung's AI-Powered Smart Ward Redefines Patient Care in Seoul

Samsung Medical Center in southern Seoul has launched a high-tech ward powered by artificial intelligence. The new smart ward uses AI to monitor patients and provide support, from tracking vital signs to offering emotional comfort through conversation.

The ward’s bed continuously measures breathing rate, pulse, and sleep quality. A tablet and wearable device also check blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels in real time. This data, along with room conditions, is sent directly to medical staff for constant monitoring.

Patients can use a tablet to view past test results, speak with doctors, call nurses, or choose meals. Voice commands let them control the room, such as opening curtains, without getting out of bed. The bathroom is equally advanced, with sensors tracking pulse and radar systems detecting falls. Facial recognition automates door access, while an AI robot—powered by OpenAI’s GPT model—engages patients in conversation and offers emotional support. The hospital’s long-term aim is to develop the ward into a fully agentic AI space, capable of assessing patient conditions independently using room data.

The smart ward at Samsung Medical Center combines real-time biometric tracking with AI-driven assistance. By automating monitoring and communication, it aims to improve patient care while reducing the burden on medical staff. Future updates will expand the system’s ability to analyse and respond to patient needs.
