Second Round for Rural Dentists in Saxony-Anhalt - Saxony-Anhalt's Bold Plan to Fix Rural Dentist Shortages Without Top Grades

Saxony-Anhalt is tackling its rural dentist shortage with a new programme that offers university places without top grades. Last October, the first four students enrolled at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg under this scheme. Now, a second application round is set to open on 1 March for four more places starting in 2026.

The initiative aims to attract dentists to underserved rural areas. Unlike traditional admissions, academic performance in high school does not determine selection. Instead, the State Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists in Saxony-Anhalt assesses candidates based on professional experience, subject-specific skills, and motivation for working in the region.

The first cohort began their studies in October 2023, though the exact number of applicants or detailed selection criteria remain undisclosed. The programme's focus is clear: prioritise those willing to commit to rural practice over those with the highest exam results.

Prospective students have until the next deadline to apply. Successful applicants will join the 2026/27 winter semester, further expanding the workforce in areas most in need.

The scheme provides an alternative route into dentistry for those dedicated to rural communities. With the next round approaching, four more students will soon have the chance to study without top grades. Their future work will help address the ongoing shortage across Saxony-Anhalt.
