More new doctors and psychotherapists in the country - Saxony-Anhalt's healthcare boom sees 650 new professionals in 2023

Saxony-Anhalt witnessed a notable surge in newly licensed healthcare professionals in 2023, with over 650 specialists, including doctors, dentists, and psychotherapists, completing their training—indicating a significant increase from previous years. This trend mirrors the growing investment in the region's medical workforce.

The number of licensed physicians in Saxony-Anhalt climbed from 336 in 2022 to 400 in 2023, marking a 50% increase that contrasts with national trends, as states like Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia experienced slight declines in new medical licences. Data from the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) highlights Saxony-Anhalt as an outlier in growth.

Psychotherapists also saw a sharp rise, with 107 completing training in 2023 compared to just 33 in 2018. Meanwhile, 103 new pharmacists and 36 dentists received their licences last year. Overall, around 650 healthcare professionals were newly certified, up from 537 in 2022 and 567 in 2024.

The figures suggest a steady expansion of Saxony-Anhalt's medical sector. More doctors and psychotherapists entered the field than in earlier years, reinforcing the region's healthcare capacity.

The 2023 figures confirm Saxony-Anhalt's progress in training and retaining healthcare staff. With more physicians, psychotherapists, and pharmacists now practicing, the region's medical services are better equipped to meet demand. Officials anticipate this growth to continue in the coming years.
