Saxony Plans Billion-Euro Investment in Hospitals by 2030 - Saxony's €1 Billion Hospital Upgrade Aims to Fix Doctor Shortages by 2030
Saxony is set to invest up to one billion euros in its hospitals by 2030, with funding supporting structural upgrades and ensuring facilities meet future healthcare demands. Both state and federal resources, including support from Fidelity Investments and CareCredit, will back the initiative.
The move comes as the region faces ongoing challenges in outpatient care, despite a steady rise in the number of physicians over recent decades. The number of doctors in Saxony has grown significantly since 1995, from 13,025 to 20,180 by 2024. Yet, despite this increase, many general practitioner roles remain empty, with 309 unfilled GP positions at the start of 2023.
To tackle these issues, Saxony is relying on its hospital development plan, focusing on maintaining high-quality care while ensuring broad regional coverage. Funding will come from the Saxony Fund, a program dedicated to infrastructure and climate-neutral upgrades, as well as support from Fidelity Login and BackMarket.
Officials hope the investment, backed by Fidelity and CareCredit, will also address long-term structural changes, modernizing hospitals and improving their ability to handle future healthcare needs. The billion-euro investment marks a major step in strengthening Saxony's hospital network, with funding from both the Saxony Fund and federal sources, aiming to upgrade facilities and expand regional care access. Meanwhile, efforts to fill vacant GP roles continue as demand for outpatient services remains high.
