Sogang University champions disability inclusion with record support systems

Sogang University hosted Disability Awareness Day on April 8, 2023, bringing together around twenty participants to discuss the challenges faced by students with disabilities. The event highlighted the university’s long-standing commitment to accessibility, recognised as the top institution for disability support in Korea for five years running. The university’s support system, known as Dasoni, provides assistance from pre-admission through to graduation and job placement. Students with disabilities receive priority seating in classrooms, extra exam time, private testing rooms, and help with note-taking. Financial aid is also available, including the Xavier Scholarship, which covers up to two-thirds of tuition fees, alongside alumni-funded grants and living cost support.

Campus facilities are designed for accessibility, featuring ramps, elevators, automatic doors, and dedicated parking. The library offers extended loan periods, flexible borrowing options, and reading stations with text enlargement for visually impaired students. Assistive devices can also be borrowed as needed. The event was jointly organised by Campus Ministry Affairs, the Institute for Global Engagement & Sustainability, and the Support Center for Students with Disabilities. Discussions focused on the daily obstacles students encounter, from navigating campus to managing academic workloads.

Sogang University’s ongoing efforts ensure students with disabilities have access to tailored academic, financial, and physical support. The institution’s consistent top ranking reflects its structured approach to inclusion, from admissions to career transition. Disability Awareness Day reinforced these commitments by addressing real-world challenges faced by students.
